China: MTR Corp has awarded CITIC Guo Hua International Contracting (Overseas) Ltd a HK$160m contract to provide the power supply system for the Tseung Kwan O extension. Shinryo Corp is to supply the tunnel environmental control system under a HK$189m contract and trackside auxiliaries for HK$91m.

Kowloon-Canton Railway Corp has awarded civil engineering contracts totalling HK$3·7bn for work on West Rail, including 9·8 km of viaduct, 2 km of running tunnels between Yen Chow Street and Mei Foo, and 2·4 km of surface route in Kam Tin, with the depot.

Denmark: The INTABB joint venture of Intertec Contracting and ABB Electric has appointed Mott MacDonald to undertake tunnel ventilation design for the København automated metro.

Great Britain: CSEE Transport of France has won a £2·7m contract to provide a Positive Train Identification system for the Tyne & Wear Metro. Short-distance high-frequency radio links will be used to exchange data with trains.

Greece: The Ministry of Transport & Communications has received a study of modernisation options for the Athens - Piraeus metro line, undertaken by the Polytechnic University of Athens. The route is due to receive the first of 120 new cars from 2000; the study has highlighted poor station facilities including a lack of car parks, waiting shelters and facilities for the disabled.

Italy: ATAC has awarded the ERG Motorola Alliance a nine-year contract worth up to 455bn lire to supply and operate a smart card fare collection system for Roma and the Lazio region. Full implementation within 24 months covers 9700 validators on light rail, bus and rail networks and 500000 smart cards.

Portugal: Metropolitano de Lisboa has ordered 38 additional M95 series three-car EMUs from a consortium of Adtranz Portugal and Siemens for 130m euros. The first delivery is due in 10 months.

Preparatory work for construction of the Porto Metro (RG 12.98 p863) began on June 28. A tunnel boring machine is due to be lowered into position in front of CP’s Campanhã station in October.

A consortium of COBA, TIS and Systra of France has been awarded a 571000 euros contract to undertake a feasibility study into converting the 35 km Coimbra - Serpins branch to light rail under the Mondego Metro project.

Romania: Dimetronic of Spain has been awarded a contract to supply Westrace electronic interlockings, ATP, ATO and CTC for the Gara de Nord - 1 Mai branch of Line 3 of the Bucuresti metro, currently under construction.

Spain: Renfe’s Suburban business unit has presented Sevilla council with a project to create a circular service using a freight bypass to the east of the city and a new spur avoiding La Salud. The project would take 12months to complete, including electrification and signalling work at a cost of Pts483m and three new stations at a cost of Pts362m.

USA: Wabco Transit Group is to supply brakes, couplers, current collectors and door systems for 212 R143 metro cars being built for MTA New York City Transit by Kawasaki Rail Car.
