by Keith Lovegrove
In its own words, this book sets out to provide ’an exuberant collection of imagery depicting vintage, modern and futuristic train travel’.
The identity, design and culture of the passenger train is explored in over 160 pages, with the help of 250 illustrations. Although car interiors loom large, in its three chapters on industrial and interior design, on-train catering and branding, livery and promotion, the book also covers the styling of locomotives and rolling stock, staff uniforms, corporate image and publicity material such as posters.
Photographs illustrate rolling stock ranging from a first class coach from the Stockton & Darlington Railway to the ICE3, and contemporary designs from Japan are well represented. The more glamorous long-distance trains such as the iconic US streamliners of 1930s tend to predominate, but there is even consideration of the commuter seats created by Atlantic Design for the Siemens Desiro EMUs for South West Trains of the UK.
