Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority Chairman Jim Lawson announced on April 5 that the $327m, 12·2 km Tasman West light rail line in San Jose, California, will open for revenue service on December 20. He said that the first extension since the initial 38·6 km route was completed in 1991 is on course to be completed a year ahead of schedule, and is still on budget.
Formal inauguration ceremonies are planned for December 17 followed by free rides over the December 18-19 weekend. The primarily single-track line, running from the current terminal at Old Ironsides in Santa Clara to Mountain View, will serve an estimated 180000 jobs along the Tasman corridor.
