The city of Portland, Oregon, has ordered five narrow-bodied trams from Skoda Inekon for US$12m to operate its Central City Streetcar line. The L-shaped route will connect a large hospital complex northwest of the city with Portland State University to the southwest.

The Streetcar is not part of the MAX light rail network but will connect with it. Utility relocation was due to begin in January and a groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for April 5. Revenue service is expected to start in September 2000.

The air-conditioned cars will have 2+1 seating and a low-floor centre section to meet accessibility requirements.
