Pesa has completed the first of 16 Swing trams ordered by the Romanian city of Iași last year at cost of €33m. The 30·5 m long five-section tram can carry 239 passengers, including 58 seated.
Singapore’s Land Transport Authority has awarded China Harbour (Singapore) Engineering Company a S$241m contract to design and construct Jurong Region Line stations JS9 and JS10 and 1∙5 km of viaduct over Jurong Central Park and Jalan Boon Lay. Construction works are expected to start this month for completion by 2029.
The speed of some of Moscow’s tram routes has increased by between 15% and 20% since management of the infrastructure was transferred to Moscow Metro, according to Deputy Mayor for Transport Maxim Liksutov. He said metro professionals were now working to ensure that the tram infrastructure meets the most stringent requirements, and that the need for repairs is reduced. ‘Within a few years, we will try to avoid long-term closure of tram lines during major repairs and replacement of tracks’, he said.
Sydney Metro has appointed Turner & Townsend, HKA, Deloitte Australia and LogiKal to provide Project Management Office Support for up to six years. The contract covers the City & Southwest, West and Western Sydney Airport projects, as well as studies into future network expansion.
Sydney Metro has shortlisted CPB Contractors and Acciona Construction Australia for the Surface & Civil Alignment Works contract for the Western Sydney Airport line.
Mace has awarded Lonsdale Rail the fitting out contract for the Paddington Square development, integrating London Underground’s existing Bakerloo Line station at Paddington with a new entrance underneath the Paddington Cube building as part of a £65m investment in transport and the public realm. Lonsdale Rail will complete the design from RIBA Stage 5 and fulfil the manufacture, delivery, offload, distribution, installation, testing and commissioning for the mechanical, electrical, fire, public health and communications fit-out packages.
On May 15 two infill stations were opened on the Tehran metro at Aghdasiyeh on Line 3 and Marzdaran on Line 6.
Mainz’s tram operator is to end the sale of tickets by drivers, with its 41 trams to be fitted with ICA ticket machines which only accept bank card, mobile phone or pre-paid card payment. This is expected to improve punctuality and reduce costs. Cash will still be accepted for off-vehicle ticket purchases
The government of Sri Lanka and the World Bank has signed a US$69·33m loan agreement to finance the Kandy Multimodal Transport Terminal Development Project, which will integrate rail, bus, three-wheeler and pedestrian traffic to improve safety and efficiency. ‘This project is part of comprehensive transport planning and improvements currently underway in the Kandy city region’, said Winnie Wang, Senior Transport Specialist at the World Bank and Task Team Leader of the project. ‘It will lead to less congestion in the city centre, safer and faster commutes for public transport and non-motorised transport users, and greater accessibility to markets, employment, schools and healthcare facilities.’
