INTRO: With Railtrack forecasting unprecedented levels of investment in Britain’s rail infrastructure, the multi-disciplinary Infrarail 98 exhibition and related seminars are attracting record numbers of suppliers and delegates
HOUSED in the former Manchester Central station, with over a century of railway heritage, the G-Mex exhibition centre is well placed to host Infrarail 98. Within a few hundred metres lies a tentacle of the electrified West Coast main line from London, for which a £2·1bn upgrading programme is the biggest single element in Railtrack’s 10-year infrastructure investment programme.
Organised by Mack-Brooks, Infrarail 98 runs from September 29 to October 1. The latest in a series of biennial events dedicated to all aspects of rail infrastructure equipment and maintenance is forecast to be the biggest so far. Around 300 exhibitors will be filling the Central and Windsor halls at G-Mex to demonstrate their products and services for every angle of the infrastructure business.
Whilst the bulk of the exhibitors are British, other European countries are well represented, including Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. From farther afield come companies from the United States and even the Ukraine.
Three organisations are planning a series of seminars on infrastructure-related topics in Manchester alongside the main exhibition.
The Institution of Civil Engineers, in association with the Institution of Railway Signal Engineers, is hosting three technical seminars on Mainline Railways, Signalling Issues and Light Rail. The Waterfront Conference Co is holding another on Railtrack’s procurement strategies. Independent Technical Conferences is organising a conference on the development of integrated railway control centres, of which Britain’s first is likely to be in Manchester (RG 7.98 p455). o
