ALGERIA: The 3·4 km final section of Constantine’s southern tramway extension from Chahid Kadri Brahim to Université Abdelhamid-Mehri was inaugurated by Prime Minister & Finance Minister Aimene Benabderrahmane on September 29.
Also participating in the celebrations were Minister of Transport Aissa Bekkai, Ali Arezki, General Manager of promoter Entreprise du Metro d’Alger and Amar Chouaki, Managing Director of Alstom Algeria.
The first phase of the line between Ben Abdelmalek Ramdane and the depot at Zouaghi Slimane was inaugurated on July 4 2013. The 10·3 km extension from Zouaghi Slimane to Université Abdelhamid-Mehri in the new town of Ali Mendjeli is being built by an Alstom-led consortium including Cosider Travaux Publics, under a contract awarded by EMA in July 2015.
The first 6·9 km of the extension as far as Chahid Kadri Brahim on the edge of the new town has been operational since May 2019. Opening of the final phase to the university adds a further six stops, bringing the line to a total length of 18·3 km with 21 stops.
Alstom has been responsible for the telecommunications, signalling, traction power, ticketing and railway systems for the extension, including the overhead line equipment. It has also supplied the fleet of 27 Citadis 402 trams, which are operated by the Setram joint venture of RATP Dev, EMA and Transtev.
