SPAIN: Regional operator FGV has completed a programme to modernise the metre gauge Benidorm – Dénia railway, which forms Line 9 of the Tram Metropolità d’Alacant network.
The final step on January 16 saw the resumption of services on the section between Gata de Gorgos and Dénia.
The Line 9 upgrade has cost €150m, including the reconstruction of two major viaducts.
The track layout at Dénia has been remodelled to permit a future tram-train style extension into the town centre. This could also facilitate a long-proposed reinstatement of the railway to Gandía.
Line 9 services operate every half hour, operated by Class 5000 electro-diesel trainsets which were supplied by Stadler Valencia in 2019.
