UKRAINE: A Flirt EMU built at Stadler’s plant in Belarus has been sent for trials on suburban routes around Kyiv, in support of the government’s City Express programme to enhance the capital’s suburban network and develop modern and high-quality S-Bahn style services in major cities including Kharkiv and Dnipro.
The City Express programme would require new rolling stock to replace ageing vehicles, and national railway Ukrzaliznytsia has been discussing supply opportunities with international manufacturers with experience of the 1 520 mm gauge market; these include Stadler, Pesa and KVSZ.
Any future orders would be dependent on government funding, and local production is envisaged in the event of an order being placed.
