SPAIN: Tendering is to begin soon for the development of national train operator RENFE Operadora’s planned ‘RENFE-as-a-Service’ digital platform for planning and purchasing multimodal door-to-door journeys.
Expected to launch by the end of 2021, RaaS would integrate modes of transport including train, bicycle, metro, bus, car sharing and scooters into one digital platform which would enable the planning of trips in a single app with a single payment.
RaaS is intended to be ‘an open and inclusive platform’ which would ‘include the different operators of the new mobility ecosystem’ including other train operators.
RENFE told Railway Gazette International that ‘we hope to offer all available mobility options to our clients. Our goal is to be accessible, neutral and transparent in our relationship with our customers and to adapt at all times to their needs, even when they are not travelling on our trains.’
The project has a budget of €39∙4m over five years, including set up and operating costs. RaaS is expected to generate more than 1·8 million new rail journeys in the first five years, with sales increasing 3% to 4% on the main corridors, and RENFE hopes to have 650 000 active customers in the fifth year.
