Former Alcatel President Jozef Cornu has been confirmed as CEO of Belgian national rail operator SNCB. His predecessor, Marc Descheemaecker, left on September 1 to become President of Brussels Airport, and the CEO of SNCB Holding Jannie Haek is also standing down to head the country’s national lottery. Descheemaeker was initially replaced by Frank Van Massenhove, who apparently was not expecting the appointment, tweeting ‘I’m as surprised as you.’ He stepped down on September 20 citing personal reasons.
Cornu led both Bell Telephone and Alcatel through difficult times and has built a reputation for turning around struggling businesses.
