PORTUGAL: Metro do Porto has called for ‘the best bridge designers in the world’ to submit proposals for a bridge to carry a light rail line across the River Douro from Campo Alegre in Porto to Candal in Vila Nova de Gaia.
The proposed bridge would be about 500 m east of the existing Arrábida concrete arch bridge, and is to be built in 2023-26 at a cost of €50m.
Requests to participate in the competition should be submitted by July 19. The jury will comprise 11 ‘personalities, technicians and specialists’ representing the light rail operator, the local authorities and engineering and architectural bodies, with a first prize of €150 000, second prize of €100 000 and third prize of €50 000.
