CANADA: Ricardo has been appointed to provide systems integration verification services for the southern extension of Ottowa’s DMU-operated O-Train Line 2.
Services on the 6 km line from Bayview to Greenboro were suspended in May 2020 to enable engineering work for the extension south to Limebank, with a branch from South Keys to Ottawa/Macdonald–Cartier International Airport, which will add 16 km and six stations. Two stops will also be added to the original route.
The extension will involve major civil works, including bridges, underpasses and grade separations, as well as new communications and train control technologies, and the delivery of seven Stadler Flirt DMUs.
As the system integration verifier, Ricardo is to undertake a structured review of the project’s risks and technical challenges, and prepare a detailed plan to guide the project’s managers, contractors and suppliers throughout the build, installation and testing stages.
‘This is a complex project, requiring a seamless integration of new infrastructure and rolling stock’, said Iain Carmichael, Managing Director of Ricardo’s rail division, on August 30.
‘By bringing valuable experience of similar light rail projects from around the world, our experts will help ensure the works deliver an extended Line 2 that is safe, reliable, and operating to the highest possible standards.’
