ROMANIA: On May 26 two renovated Bucuresti metro cars left the Alstom Transport site at Reichshoffen to start a five-day journey, across Germany, Austria and Hungary, to the workshop of Bucuresti metro operator Metrorex.
Alstom is in the process of renovating 15 trainsets manufactured by Astra Vagoane Arad around 20 years ago. The project team at Reichshoffen has spent more than 12 months evaluating, reconditioning and testing the two pre-production cars; work included renewing the drive trains and auxiliary convertors and replacing air compressors and braking equipment.
The first renovated trainset is due to enter service in November this year. Modernisation of the remaining cars will be carried out in Bucuresti and is due for completion in March 2012.
Alstom has a 15-year maintenance agreement with Metrorex, signed in June 2004, to maintain both the locally-built Astra cars and Bombardier six-car Movia trainsets using the operator’s three existing depots, workshop and staff.
