CHINA: Shenzhen Metro has awarded a contract worth 9·3bn yuan to China Railway Group to construct Line 5 on a build and transfer basis. Linking Shenzen West with Longhua, Line 5 will be 41 km long with 27 stations and a rolling stock depot. It is due to open to traffic on June 30 2011.
Meanwhile, on September 13 the first domestically-designed and manufactured A-type metro car rolled off the assembly line at CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co. Destined for use on Shenzhen Line 1, the vehicle weighs less than 52 tonnes, reducing power consumption, and the interior is 3 100 mm wide. It is fitted with ‘the latest passenger information, security and safety systems', according to the manufacturer.
