The first rail weld was ignited by Mayor of Mesa, Scott Smith, and East Valley Institute of Technology welding student, Sierra Jennings.

USA: Welding students from the East Valley Institute of Technology watched and assisted with the welding of the first rails for the Central Mesa light rail extension of the Valley Metro in Phoenix, Arizona, on February 8.

The process was described to the students by the Valley Transit Constructors joint venture which is building the extension.

The $200m Central Mesa extension will run 5 km along Main Street from Sycamore to Mesa Drive. Construction began in May 2012, and services are scheduled to start by early 2016.
