MALAYSIA: Kuala Lumpur urban rail operator Prasarana Malaysia Berhad has awarded Thales a contract to develop and equip an Integrated Control Centre to oversee operation of the city’s Kelana Jaya, Sri Petaling, Ampang and monorail lines.
Due to be completed by April 2023, the control room at Taman Ikan Emas would be responsible for around 100 route-km, served by a total fleet of around 100 trains. Although the lines use different traction technologies, the unified centre will provide a fully integrated overview of Prasarana’s rail operations. This will enable the operator to respond quickly in case of system failures or incidents affecting any of its lines.
Thales will provide its SelTrac CBTC and AlTrac ETCS Level 1 train control and supervision technology for the ICC, along with network management and backup systems. It will also modify the three existing operations control centres to act as backup control rooms in case of failures.
Local subsidiary Thales Malaysia Sdn Bhd will act as prime contractor, working with Prasarana on project management and co-ordination. As part of the Malaysia government’s Protégé programme, Thales will involve a pool of young graduates in the project as part of their training for future employment in the rail sector.
