UK: Transport for Greater Manchester has begun a market sounding to gain a better understanding of the availability of technology which could automatically intervene if a tram approaches a higher risk location at a speed which could result in derailment, and also monitor the attentiveness of tram drivers and take action if low attentiveness is detected.
If an effective system is found, a plan would be developed for its introduction.
TfGM said it had been been supporting the wider light rail industry in understanding the impact of recommendations which the Rail Accident Investigation Branch made following its investigation into the fatal overturning of a tram on a sharp curve at Sandilands in Croydon in November 2016.
