UK: Transport for West Midlands is trialling mobile ticketing using the UK’s ITSO interoperable specification on the West Midlands Metro tram network.
The pilot project is funded by the Midlands Connect regional partnership as part of its smart ticketing programme. It is initially available for up to 500 users, with the aim of a wider rollout that would also include buses and trains in the future.
The local Swift smart card is available on Android smartphones. Purchased tickets are delivered to the Google Pay digital wallet using a cloud-based ticket fulfilment service integrated with the operator’s back office system and with Google Pay.
The technology has been developed with ITSO Transit Hub, which hopes to introduce it to other operators.
‘Easing the end-to-end travel experience has been a key focus for Google’, said Google’s Strategic Partner Manager Carlos Gonzalez.
