UK: Panasonic is to supply a wireless communications network for the Merseyrail network serving Liverpool that will include on-board passenger wi-fi and video and voice links to the control centre.

The wi-fi will be fitted to the 52 four-car electric multiple-units that Stadler is supplying, which are due to enter service from 2020. In addition to transmitting CCTV footage to the control centre, the network would provide data on the number of passengers on board.

‘We’re delighted to be working with Panasonic, industry leaders in connected public transport technology, as part of what we hope will be a long-term partnership’, said Transport Portfolio Holder for the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority Liam Robinson. ‘Wireless links between trains and our control centre will also allow us to manage capacity of the network — essential as the Liverpool City Region economy grows and demand increases.’
