UK: Apple’s Apple Pay system which links payment card accounts to iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus or Apple Watches can be used pay for travel on public transport within London from July 14.
Apple Pay has the same validity and is used in a similar way to contactless bank card payment, which has been available on rail services in London since September 2014. Transport for London says that more than 1·2 million contactless transactions/day now represent 17% of pay as you go journeys.
'With around one in 10 of all contactless transactions in the UK now taking place on our transport services in London, we are delighted to welcome Apple Pay as another new and convenient contactless way for our customers to pay for their travel’, said TfL Director of Customer Experience, Shashi Verma. ‘I would encourage anyone who uses pay as you go to try contactless. There's no need to top-up, just touch in and out with your mobile device, credit or debit card.'
‘Apple Pay is another welcome and convenient way for people to pay to hop on a train,’ according to David Mapp, Commercial Director at the Association of Train Operating Companies. ‘Many train passengers are already using contactless bank cards and smart cards like Oyster, or buying e-tickets on smartphones. Over the next ten years we will see increasing use of the latest technology to transform the way people buy rail travel.’
