SPAIN: Indra has deployed contactless EMV bank card payment on RENFE’s Málaga suburban services.
Passengers pass through the entry and exit gates by holding their bank card or suitable mobile device over the sensor. Indra’s Mova Collect fare collection system then charges the appropriate single fare for the zones travelled through; Indra said single tickets are bought by more than 80% of the users of Malaga’s suburban network.
Contactless payment is expected to reduce the use of paper tickets by 70%, meaning that fewer automatic vending machines will be needed. It is also expected to help make rail services more attractive for occasional travellers and tourists who do not hold a local transport smart card.
