SPAIN: CAF has developed a vehicle occupancy data management platform which enables rail operators to track the number of passengers per train, coach, location, time and service, and to analyse historical data to forecast passenger demand more accurately.
The number of passengers can be estimated from the train weight or calculated using a dedicated passenger counting system.
Applications include facilitating social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic by enabling passengers to find the emptiest coach, and reducing station dwell times by telling passengers where to stand on the platform before the train arrives.
In the event of an incident, operators can find out how many people are on a particular train, enabling them to make more informed decisions about how to respond.
