NORWAY: National freight operator CargoNet has signed a long-term full-service lease agreement for European Loc Pool to supply it with two Stadler EuroDual six-axle electro-diesel locomotives at the end of October 2022.
The locomotives will have an output of 2·8 MW in diesel mode and 6 MW under electrification, making them suitable for use on heavy freight services on both electrified and non-electrified lines.
They will be equipped for ETCS Level 2 Baseline 3, which is currently being implemented in Norway, as well as radio remote control.
Announcing the order on September 20, ELP said the electro-diesel locos would reduce CargoNet’s diesel costs, improve its environmental footprint and enable it to haul up to 50% heavier trains on the electrified lines than when using four-axle electric locomotives.
ELP had previously signed a framework agreement with Stadler for 100 Co-Co electro-diesel locomotives. So far firm orders have been placed for 54 EuroDuals and 10 Euro9000s, of which 52 are covered by long-term full-service lease agreements with 20 customers in five countries, with 31 EuroDuals in service with 14 operators in Germany, Sweden and Norway.
In Q2 2023 ELP is to launch the Euro9000 multi-system electro-diesel locomotive for use on European corridors. The first version ordered in in May 2019 will be rated at 1·9 MW using diesel power and 9 MW using electric power, with initial certification for Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Italy, Belgium and Switzerland to be expanded to other countries.
