ITALY: The first two diesel-battery multiple-units that Stadler has supplied for Campania regional operator EAV entered service on the Napoli – Piedimonte Matese line on November 24.
EAV ordered five Stadler diesel-battery multiple-units in May 2019 at a cost of €35m plus VAT. The remaining three will be delivered by Christmas, replacing existing rolling stock that is more than 50 years old.
The bi-mode trains have two latest generation low-emission diesel engines and two sets of traction batteries, providing a 30% reduction in fuel consumption compared to the vehicles currently used on non-electrified lines in Campania.
Each train has capacity for 328 passengers, of which 168 can be seated. The 140 km/h units are fully accessible, and feature LED lighting, wi-fi provision, USB ports and 220 V sockets.
