RUSSIA: Ural Locomotives has unveiled its first 3ES8 Malakhit three-section 3 kV DC electric locomotive, which is intended as the basis for a new generation of electric locomotives incorporating domestic technology.
Domestically designed and manufactured technology includes the asynchronous traction drive developed by Sinara’s Tyagovye Komponenty and Transneft’s Russkie Elektricheskie Dvigateli subsidiaries.
The locomotive is designed to haul 7 100 tonne trains on mountainous routes. Certification and acceptance testing is expected to be completed in October.
