SPAIN: Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca has ordered five four-car electric multiple-units from CAF for use on its metre-gauge routes from Palma de Mallorca to Inca, Sa Pobla and Manacor.
Scheduled to enter service in 2024, the 1·5 kV DC EMUs will be based on units that CAF has previously supplied to Euskotren. They will have two driving motor cars and two intermediate trailers, giving a capacity of more than 500 passengers. They will operate at a maximum speed of 100 km/h.
The contract announced on February 8 includes the provision of spare parts and two years of maintenance. It is being financed from a €54·6m funding package agreed in August 2021, with 90% of the money coming from the European Union’s REACT-EU coronavirus recovery fund.
CAF supplied six two-car Class 7100 units for the Palma de Mallorca Metro in 2006, and in 2008 it was awarded a contract to supply five three-car and eight four-car Class 8100 EMUs to SFM.
