AUSTRALIA: Transport for NSW has awarded the RailConnect joint venture a contract to supply a further 56 Mariyung double-deck electric multiple-unit cars, increasing the New Intercity Fleet to a total of 610 vehicles.
The RailConnect consortium of Hyundai Rotem, Mitsubishi Electric Australia and UGL Rail was selected in August 2016 to supply new rolling stock for NSW TrainLink inter-city services.
The double-deck EMUs are intended to replace trains operating from Sydney to the Central Coast, Newcastle, the Blue Mountains and South Coast. The fleet has been branded Mariyung, the Darug word for emu.
An initial A$2·3bn order for 512 cars was followed in 2019 by a A$130m contract to supply a further 42. Deliveries began in December 2020.
The original contract includes 15 years of maintenance, for which a purpose-built depot at Kangy Angy on the Central Coast was completed by John Holland in February. The latest order includes the installation of an additional transformer at the depot.
Announcing the contract on September 14, UGL said it would generate revenue of more than A$100m for the company.
