EGYPT: Two prototype third class coaches for Egyptian National Railways were unveiled when Minister of Transport Kamel al-Wazir visited Transmashholding’s Tver Carriage Works in Russia on October 4.
In September 2018 TMH Hungary signed a five-year contract worth more than €1bn for the supply of 1 300 coaches. The technical specifications were approved in July this year, enabling the production of two prototypes for testing and certification.
The third class coaches have 88 seats, forced ventilation, two toilets and LED lighting. The bolsterless bogies have a two-stage leaf spring suspension to provide a smooth ride, and are fitted with disc braking and a wheelslip protection system.
The ENR order includes 500 coaches of this type, as well as 500 third class cars with air-conditioning, 180 air-conditioned second class cars, 30 second class cars with air-conditioning and a buffet and 90 air-conditioned first class cars.
TMH’s Tver plant will manufacture half of the vehicles, along with key components for the remainder, as well as overseeing the technology transfer arrangements. TMH Hungary Invest’s Dunakeszi Járműjavító business will be a financial partner and produce the remaining half of the fleet. Some final work will be undertaken in Egypt under a localisation agreement.
The first vehicles are expected to be delivered in spring 2020.
