CANADA: The City of Ottawa and TransitNEXT consortium leader SNC Lavalin have formally declared Stadler the winner of a contract to supply seven four-car Flirt diesel-electric multiple-units.
The C$106m order confirmed on April 23 has been placed as part of the Trillium Line extension project. Forming part of the city’s O-Train Stage 2 rail and light rail expansion programme, the will see TransitNEXT design, build, finance and maintain an extension of the 8 km north-south Trillium Line south from Greenboro to Riverside South, with a branch to Macdonald-Cartier International Airport, adding 16 km and eight stations.
The DMUs are to be supplied from Stadler’s factory at Bussnang in Switzerland. Deliveries are scheduled to start in mid-2021, ahead of the opening of the extension in 2022.
The 120 km/h units will have four 480 kW diesel engines in a power module. They will comply with Tier 4 emissions standards, be suitable for infrastructure meeting Track Class IV standards, meet North American fire safety standard NFPA 130 and comply with both the local Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act and US Americans with Disabilities Act standards.
The contract is Stadler’s second in Canada, the 18th country where it has won an order for Flirt multiple-units, coming after an order to supply double-deck dome cars for the Rocky Mountaineer tourist service.
