UK: Discussions are underway for a ‘be in be out’ rail ticketing scheme in Scotland. A pilot could be launched by ScotRail this autumn, with public use from early 2023.
Geofences would be installed at stations, with passengers entering the station receiving a message on their mobile device asking them to confirm that they are at the station and planning to travel.
On confirmation, they would be issued with a barcode which could be used at ticket gates, if present, or shown to ticket inspectors during the journey.
On arrival at their destination, the station geofence would trigger another message asking the passenger to confirm that they have completed their journey.
The system would use iBlock’s Hopsta mobile ticketing platform. The hope is that this would be quick and easy to deploy, avoiding the need for EMV bank card readers to be installed at remote locations.
