ITALY: Knorr-Bremse has been selected to supply brakes, doors and HVAC for the next generation of Sirio trams which Hitachi Rail is to build for Torino operator GTT. The contract is valued in the ‘low double-digit million euro’ range.
In May 2020 GTT and Hitachi Rail finalised a €63·4m firm order for 30 of the next generation of Sirio trams, with an option for a further 40. The trams are to be produced at Hitachi Rail’s Napoli, Pistoia and Reggio Calabria sites for delivery from late 2021.
The hydraulic braking systems will feature Knorr-Bremse’s SysControl electronic brake control with an ethernet train real time data protocol interface using a redundant train network. Enhanced sanding systems will optimise wheel-rail adhesion in adverse weather conditions. The brake callipers have been adapted to the ‘challenging’ steering characteristics of the bogies, while dual-channel hydraulic control units for the trailer bogie are intended to maximise brake performance. The electromagnetic track brakes will be independently suspended.
Knorr-Bremse subsidiary IFE will supply RL2-e2 sliding plug doors, and its Merak business will deliver the cab HVAC and two roof-mounted units for the main saloon.
