GERMANY: Xiangtan Electric Manufacturing Group has selected Voith Engineering Services to develop a low-floor tram for the Chinese market.
The €7m project will last until the end of 2014. As part of the collaboration between the two firms, Voith will train 15 Chinese employees at its headquarters in Chemnitz, with a view to possible longer-term co-operation.
‘The plan is to generate a complete line of vehicles from the low-floor tram now being developed that will meet the various customer requirements in different Chinese regions,’ explained Frank Salzwedel, Manager for Development & Technology at Voith.
This is the second time that Voith has worked on trams with a Chinese company. Last year it developed a low-floor tram for China CNR Corp.
