NEW ZEALAND: A review by AECOM has estimated that the cost of building a light rail system in Wellington would range from NZ$12m to NZ$141m per km.
Mayor Celia Wade-Brown made the introduction of light rail by 2020 a major part of her campaign platform, and says the NZ$400m cost of providing a service from the railway station to the airport would not be met solely by local taxpayers.
The AECOM review is one of the first stages in an overall NZ$1m study into the options for the city's public transport spine, which is expected to be completed early next year when public feedback will be sought on up to four options.
