BOOK REVIEW: This 400-page book is a compilation of lectures held at Ruhr-Universität Bochum over the past 20 years, and is intended for readers with a solid knowledge of electric motors and electronics.
After a short historical review of electric traction and mechanical drives, the bulk of the book deals with the technologies used by ABB, Alstom, Bombardier and Siemens. This second edition also includes a section on permanent magnet synchronous motors and lighter inverter-fed medium-frequency transformers for 16·7 Hz.
The book offers a broad view over many facets of traction systems and electronics, supported by detailed electrical diagrams, ranging from a modern 6 MW four-system locomotive through 2 x 25 kV autotransformers to rubber tyred metros, maglev and trolleybuses.
