NOW AVAILABLE in English is this detailed technical description of Italy's experiences with the implementation of ETCS Level 2 on the Roma - Napoli and Torino - Novara high speed routes (RG 2.06 p71).
The authors are members of the College of Italian Railway Engineers, and begin with an overview of the need for common international standards, going on to look at RFI's objectives and planned migration strategy. Current European projects are considered, then there is a description of the architecture of the ETCS technology, and how it was designed, developed, approved and deployed on the Italian high speed lines. The authors consider planned future developments, and the life cycle of the technology from concept to decommissioning.
To assist with understanding the complex system there is a description of how the ETCS operates as a train is driven from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale.
