POLAND: Test running began on June 25 with the first tram to be produced by Polish rolling stock manufacturer Newag. The prototype Nevelo tram will be tested on route 8 of Kraków’s network until September 22.
The three-section, unidirectional, articulated tram was designed and built in Newag’s Nowy Sącz factory with the help of 4·9m złoty from the National Centre for Research & Development. Several features are designed to lower running costs, including supercapacitor energy storage. The resilient wheels and ‘innovative’ suspension are designed to offer a smoother and quieter ride, and will minimise wear, according to Newag.
The air-conditioned vehicle has space for 235 passengers, including 60 seated. The 100% low-floor tram is fitted with electric ramps for wheelchair users, as well as wide doors.
