SINGAPORE: Land Transport Authority has announced plans to upgrade the signalling on the North-South and East-West lines by May 2011 to achieve 100 sec headways at peak times and increase capacity by 15% to 20%.
The existing signalling has been in operation since 1987. Around 120 trains will need to be modified, and more trains are expected to be ordered.
Construction company Yongnam Holdings has been awarded a S$25m contract for Phase II of the Downtown Line from Bugis to Petir. Work will start in October and will take three years. The 16·6 km section will have 12 stations and a depot. There will be interchanges to the Northeast Line at Little India, the North-South Line at Newton and the Circle Line at Botanic Gardens.
