ITALY: Milano transport operator ATM started testing account-based contactless bank card ticketing at a metro station on May 14, making it the first such application in Italy.
SIA has supplied the technology, which has been installed at Loreto station on Line M1; Ingenico has supplied the card reader. Contactless card readers are to be installed at all 113 metro stations by the end of June, ahead of the start of commercial operations.
Fares will be valid for 90 min after touching in, so they will be valid on bus and tram routes, but only if the journey has started on the metro. Once 5G telecoms technology is rolled out, ATM expects to install contactless readers on the surface transport routes as well.
