JAPAN: Tokyu Corp has ordered three 10-car electric multiple-units from J-TREC for use on Denentoshi Line suburban services in Tokyo from spring 2018. The 1 067 mm gauge units will be designated Series 2020, to mark the city’s hosting of the 2020 Olympic Games.
The 1·5 kV DC units will be from the manufacturer’s Sustina family which has been supplied to operators including JR East. The 20 m long cars will have four doors per side, with styling by Tanseisha Co.
The interiors will feature high-backed seats, spaces for pushchairs and wheelchairs, CCTV and multi-lingual passenger information including screens with travel information, news and weather. The Series 2020 will be designed to be quieter in operation than the current fleet, with onboard diagnostic systems to support maintenance, LED lighting to reduce energy consumption, air purifiers and improved air-conditioning.
